Hockey India participates in the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Hockey India reversed its decision to withdraw from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin has announced that Indian hockey teams will compete at the CWG.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place between July 28 and August 8, 2021. The Indian men’s hockey team won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games after 41 years. Indian Olympic Federation (IOC) President Narinder Batra and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur have guaranteed India’s participation in the CWG, provided they qualify for the event. Martin said Indian hockey teams will have to secure a place in the CWG qualifiers.

“No team has offered a place yet, but the IOA has told the CGF president that it will (IOA) accept if the teams qualify, which is very likely,” a CGF official told PTI.

Earlier, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur rebuked Hockey India for its unilateral decision to withdraw from the CWG without any interaction with the Ministry of Sports.

“The hockey federation should have consulted the sports ministry and the government before deciding to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Thakur also struck at players saying if cricketers can play in the IPL as well as the World Cup, why can’t hockey players participate at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games? ”said Anurag Thakur.
