It is learned that the National Election Commission headed by s Chetan Sharmawould allow the Indian No. 1 tester to take a little break from the game after spending considerable time in bio-bubbles in the last two months.
Kohli is suffering the worst phase of his career because he hasn’t scored a century in almost three years.
“Virat Kohli will probably be rested for the South African series. He played a lot of cricket and has been in the bubbles for a long time,” senior BCCI a development official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
“It was a political decision regarding Kohli and the other older players that they would be given periodic breaks from time to time.”
South Africa will play a Twenty20 series of five games in India from 9 to 19 June. The matches will be hosted by Delhi, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru.
India will travel to the UK in June and July. He will first play the T20 series against Ireland and then compete against England in one test (5th test series 2021) and six games with the white ball.
Kohli is suffering one of his worst IPL seasons RCB. He has as many as three golden ducks (rejecting the first ball) with only one score of 50 plus which he showed in his contribution below the value of 216 runs.
In 12 games he has an average of 19.63 and a poor strike rate of 111.34.
There are times when stepping away from bumps and consistent review helps a player get back on track, and Kohli might just need one for himself.
Former head coach Ravi Shastri has already said clearly and loudly that Kohli needs to extend his break from the game.
“Whether it’s two months or a month and a half, either after England or before England. He needs a break because he has 6-7 years of cricket left and you don’t want to lose it with a fried brain,” Shastri said recently.
Ian Bishop recently pointed out that Kohli was fired in different ways by different types of bowlers and that was worrying.
The selection committee will meet near the end of the IPL, and the series against Proteas will kick off the Indian team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November.
“Even the skipper Rohit Sharma it would require an adequate break with so much played cricket. Some of the others include KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pantwho will need a break from time to time, “the official said.
There remains the possibility that some of the players are rested after the first two or three games in the SA series.
While most of the team’s core players will be available, newcomers like Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh, who were impressive in the IPL, will also be fighting for the national team.
