ROLE SUMMARY

Badminton England is the national governing body for this sport in England. It is also the leading domestic nation in charge of delivering a World Class program for the UK, whose main goal is to achieve medal success at the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and World Championships.

As a result, Badminton England is responsible for the strategic management, day-to-day operation and delivery of the following programs:

GB World Class Program (“GB WCP”)

The GB World Class Program includes players from home countries with the potential to succeed in medal at the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. Currently, separate Olympic and Paralympic programs are being conducted in Milton Keynes and Sheffield.

English performance and programs for juniors (“EPP” and “EJP”)

The Badminton England Performance Team manages and coordinates support for English Performance Players and English Junior Performance Players. These programs support and act as a feed system for the GB program.

The Performance Director is responsible for the overall strategic implementation of the English Performance Program and the World Class Program in GB and the achievement of strategic objectives.

MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES

The Performance Director is responsible for the overall strategic implementation of the English Performance Program and the World Class Program in GB and the achievement of strategic objectives.

This will include:

  • Lead, manage, monitor and report on GB WCP and EPP / EJP
  • Deliver the goals and objectives of the World Class Performance Plan for the period culminating in the 2024 Paris Olympics, including the European, Commonwealth and World Championships, in line with the goals agreed with UK Sport.
  • Develop and coordinate strategic plans together with the governing bodies of the constituent disciplines for performance and excellence during and beyond the planning period.
  • Influence England’s badminton talent development programs which focus on developing the future potential to win Olympic medals.

Leadership in performance

  • Lead the development and implementation of the performance strategy, four-year and annual planning with the SLT and report regularly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Board on progress in achieving the objectives
  • Lead change by creating and leading a world-class environment and culture in every discipline, by building strong relationships with all stakeholders, including technical, managerial and administrative staff, personal trainers, athletes and professional support staff
  • Work closely with coaches in each discipline (and in all programs) to set challenging but realistic goals and establish the operational plan and resources needed to achieve agreed goals. This will include, but is not limited to:
      • Model of preparation and competition
      • Detachment structures
      • Selection standards
      • Selection rules for ensembles and events
      • Artist reviews
      • Activity plans for competitions, control events, etc.
  • Provide best practice approaches to selecting and undoing player selections and individualized planning and auditing throughout the journey
  • Leverage expertise within a multidisciplinary team that includes coaches and support staff. Have strategic responsibility for the personal development programs of all employees involved in World Class programs
  • Design, lead and direct a professional and innovative support structure for sports science and medicine to improve the performance of selected athletes
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversee the management of training organization for players assigned to training at the National Badminton Center

Organizational leadership

  • Be responsible for recruiting and managing all program staff for GB WCP and EPP & EJP, including the implementation of relevant badminton staff policies in England and performance management systems
  • Be responsible for creating a world-class plan for the programs and delivering them later. Implement the agreed recommendations from the Walk the Floor review
  • According to the available funding, determine the budget for each discipline and for the generic areas of the program. PD has overall responsibility for ensuring that expenditures do not exceed the budget and working with the Director of Operations to prepare the required financial statements required by Badminton England and UK Sport
  • Establish robust tools to monitor the effectiveness of all aspects of the program
  • Work closely with and manage the program administration team, ensure the creation of efficient logistics processes to ensure effective program management in all areas

Relationship management

  • Be prominent on the world stage to ensure that good relations with the International Badminton Federation and other national federations are achieved in support of the program’s goals
  • Attend the Badminton GB Ltd Board and the Badminton England Board, where necessary, to agree on a World Class program strategy
  • Represent Badminton England and the GB team in all relevant media issues related to the performance program

Other duties

  • Undertake other duties from time to time as reasonably required by the Chief Executive Officer
  • Lead relevant staff appointed to the Olympic environment

IMPORTANT DESIRABLE
Qualifications

Have significant experience in international badminton at the elite level.

Diploma and / or other relevant qualification (s) in sports coaching, management or sports science.

Knowledge and experience

  • He has shown success as a leader in the elite badminton program at the Olympic / Paralympic and world level.
  • Highly developed strategic leadership skills including planning, problem solving and decision making.
