Max Verstappen was ‘irritable’ with his performance at the Miami Grand Prix due to constant problems with his Red Bull car, according to his father, despite winning the race.

Verstappen was thought to be facing a tough fight after missing most of his training sessions on Friday due to problems with the reliability of his car.

But the Dutchman organized a master class in driving to win the checkered flag in Florida, after overtaking Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – the current leader of the championship – and his teammate Carlos Sainz in third place from third place.

Verstappen did not give up his lead and won the race to reduce Leclerc’s lead to just 19 points, despite having two DNFs on his racing record so far this season.

Writing in his columnMax’s father Jos revealed that despite an exciting win, the younger Verstappen wasn’t exactly happy spent in Miami ‘after a tough start to the weekend’.

‘The car problems on Friday meant he had very little exercise and you need that time to adjust the car, especially on the new street circle,’ Jos wrote.

‘I could understand why he was a little irritable.’

While defending his son’s stance, Jos also admitted that Max made a mistake during qualifying and left the lead to his main rivals.

After seeming to have solved problems in training, Verstappen held the pole in qualifying until the final laps when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz skipped him.

Desperate to regain the advantage, Verstappen made a costly mistake in the first part of his last qualifying round and took third place online.

‘It was a shame he made a mistake in qualifying, but it can happen,’ Jos wrote.

‘It didn’t help that he didn’t know the track as well as usual’, a reference to the lack of time on the track Max had due to car problems in practice.

After significantly diminishing Leclerc’s lead, Jos admitted that Max and Red Bull couldn’t afford more mistakes.

‘It can go either way, but it’s clear you just can’t have DNF,’ Jos wrote.

‘If Red Bull’s reliability proves to be good, then I think Max will have another strong season and we will have an exciting duel between him and Leclerc.

‘Then it’s actually a question of which team will develop the car better and which upgrades will work best.’
